Discover the passion of Casting Crowns through powerful lyrics and a bold sound that will bring you back to the foot of the throne. From the challenging If We Are the Body to the beautiful Who Am I, fans of Third Day, Mercy Me and Steven Curtis Chapman will all find something to love on this impressive debut album.
Bringing Christian Music a fresh, relevant voice just when you think you've heard it all, Casting Crowns shows off a raw pop/rock sound that should quickly perk up your ears. Frontman Mark Hall, a youth minister, has tailored all of his songs to speak directly to the church -- but don't assume this to be the typical "encourage the Body" fluff that we're used to.
Hall speaks honestly from his heart about the ways in which the church is falling short, is putting on too many pretenses, and generally failing to be God to the world. This is best heard on the group's first single, the dynamic "If We Are the Body," but it's also heard on "What If His People Prayed," and the irresistible rock hook on "American Dream," which effectively describes the modern affliction of busyness. "Voice of Truth," which Hall co-wrote with co-producer Steven Curtis Chapman, along with the lovely "Who Am I" serve as pick-me-ups to the lowly and the unworthy. The album's second half moves into praise & worship territory, with all-new choruses, except for the final track (a Darrell Evans cover).
Hall's gritty, wide-open vocals are just what the doctor ordered for these emotional, heart-on-the-sleeve songs, blending perfectly with Chapman and Mark Miller's organic production (yes, that's Mark Miller of Sawyer Brown, who founded this new label). The album's most refreshing aspect, though, is still the stark, heart-felt honesty and fresh, vibrant perspective that Hall brings to the table. | | | | | |
